Multiple endocrine neoplasia

(all autosomal dominant)
- Three types:
- MEN I (Wermer's Syndrome)– tumors of the anterior pituitary, parathyroids and pancreatic islets
- Chromosome defect is on chromosome 11q
- May also include schwannomas and small intestinal carcinoids
- MEN IIa (Sipple's Syndrome) and b
- Both groups display medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytomas
- MEN IIa also includes parathyroid hyperplasia
- Associated with chromosome losses on chromosome 1 and 10; Remember: these sum up to 11 which is the chromosome MEN I is found on
- MEN IIb also includes mucosal neuromas, ganglioneuromatosis of the GI tract and Marfan-like habitus
