Anterior scalene muscle

Anterior scalene muscle (attaches to transverse process of C3 and first rib) Important for three reasons

  1. internal jugular vein runs across it just lateral and anterior
    • note: vagus nerve runs between internal jugular and common carotid
  2. phrenic nerve (C234) runs on lateral aspect
  3. brachial plexus exits just posterior and lateral
